NASARAWA GOVERNMENT SHUTS LAFIA MODERN MARKET OVER POOR SANITATION
The Nasarawa State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Lafia Modern Market in the state capital over persistent poor sanitation and environmental neglect.
The closure, which was carried out by officials of the State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in collaboration with security operatives, saw the market sealed off on Monday morning.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Elayo, said the decision followed repeated warnings to traders and market leaders to clean up the facility, which were ignored.
Elayo, who described the sanitary conditions in the market as “unacceptable,” stated that the state government would not allow such negligence to continue.
“The sanitary conditions of markets across the state are so disgusting and require decisive actions to address the poor hygiene practices of traders,” she said.
The commissioner explained that the market would remain closed until its management and traders conduct a thorough cleanup exercise and meet the required environmental standards set by the government.

She added that the action was part of the government’s broader efforts to maintain public hygiene and prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases.
Some traders expressed frustration over the closure, saying it would affect their businesses, but pledged to comply with the government’s directive and ensure that the market is cleaned up for reopening.
The state government has in recent months intensified efforts to enforce environmental sanitation laws across Nasarawa, including monthly clean-up exercises and stricter monitoring of public spaces to promote a cleaner and healthier environment.
