By Aishat Momoh. O.

A carpenter identified simply as Ovoke has been shot dead in what police believe to be a cult-related reprisal attack in the Warri area of Delta State.
The incident reportedly occurred on October 23, 2025, barely two weeks after a man known as Ghenero was stabbed to death during a fight over a debt in the Iyara community of the state.
According to reports, Ghenero’s killing on October 12 followed a confrontation with an acquaintance who accused him of owing money from a business transaction. The argument escalated into a fight, during which Ghenero was fatally stabbed.
Sources said that Ovoke was attacked and shot dead at the McIver Market area of Warri in what is believed to be a retaliatory strike linked to the earlier killing.
A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the development, stating:
“The deceased was attacked and shot dead at McIver in Warri. The incident happened at night and is believed to be connected to the killing of one Ghenero in Iyara.”
A video shared by the anti-cultism advocacy group Naija Confra, and seen by reporters, showed Ovoke pleading for his life moments before he was shot in the head.
The platform also disclosed that Ovoke’s girlfriend was hit by a bullet during the attack.
“During the shooting, Ovoke’s girlfriend was also hit by a bullet in her lap and was rushed to the hospital, where she is receiving treatment. Ovoke was said to be a carpenter who also sold wooden chairs in the area,” the statement read.
It was further noted that the attack occurred in the same area where suspected cultists, believed to be members of the Vikings confraternity, had earlier killed the son of an army officer.
In recent weeks, Warri and its environs have witnessed a surge in cult-related violence, resulting in several deaths and injuries.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, said the killing was part of a series of ongoing cult clashes in the area.
“The incident is related to cases of cult attacks that happened in Warri recently. That is the only place we have recorded such attacks lately. Investigation is ongoing,” Edafe stated.
