By Aishat Momoh. O.

A 35-year-old woman, Habiba Abubakar, and her nine-year-old daughter, Adama, have drowned in a tragic boat accident in Hawul Local Government Area of Borno State.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 26, 2025, around 1:15 p.m., happened as the victims were returning home from their farm, according to the state police command.
Speaking on Tuesday, the Borno State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nahum Daso, said the duo attempted to cross a river near Ghung village when their boat capsized due to strong water currents.
“They were returning from the farm and attempted to cross a river near Ghung village. But due to the strong currents, their boat capsized in the deeper part of the river,” Daso explained.
He added that police operatives and local divers later recovered the bodies from the river.
“There were no marks of violence on the bodies. Photographs were taken for record purposes before they were evacuated to the General Hospital, Garkida, in Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, because that was the health facility close to them,” he said.
Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that a medical doctor at the Garkida hospital pronounced the victims dead on arrival. Their remains were subsequently released to family members for burial in line with Islamic rites.
Daso also disclosed that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Maiduguri has commenced an investigation into the incident.
This tragedy adds to the growing number of boat accidents recently recorded across the North-East region, including a similar incident in September, when the lifeless body of a 12-year-old hawker was recovered from the Gamboru River in Maiduguri.
