The Edo State Police Command has arrested 13 suspects in connection with the violent clash that erupted in Ogheghe community, Upper Siluko Road, Benin City, following the killing of a 23-year-old man, Chigozie Ifeonu.
The unrest, which broke out on Wednesday, reportedly began after Ifeonu was stabbed during a dispute over a failed motorcycle transaction. His death sparked outrage among residents, leading to a confrontation between local youths and members of the Hausa community.
Eyewitnesses said angry youths took to the streets with dangerous weapons in a bid to avenge the killing. Several people were injured in the ensuing chaos, while others fled for safety as police officers fired teargas canisters to disperse the crowd.
One resident told reporters, “I can’t really say how the deceased was stabbed by the Hausa youth over a deal that went wrong, but it triggered a clash between Benin boys and the Hausa youths. Many of them had to abandon their businesses for fear of being attacked.”
Another source explained that the deceased had given a motorcycle to a Hausa youth on hire purchase, but the suspect allegedly absconded with it. “When Ifeonu tried to reclaim the bike, he was stabbed. It’s unfortunate this happened,” the source said.
A viral video on Thursday showed parts of the Hausa quarters in the community burnt down, while some youths were seen beating two men with wooden planks.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the deceased was rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where he was confirmed dead.
“The Edo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that normalcy has been restored to Ogheghe Community, Upper Siluko Road, Benin City, following a violent incident that occurred on October 28, 2025, at about 4:45 p.m.,” the statement read.
“One male victim, Chigozie Ifeonu, aged 23 years, was stabbed in the chest during the disturbance. He was immediately rushed to UBTH, where he was unfortunately confirmed dead. His corpse has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Swift response by the Area Commander, Ekiadolor Area Command, ACP Garba Umaru, alongside Operation Rescue Teams, operatives from Ogida Division, and other command tactical units ensured the immediate restoration of peace and protection of lives and property.”
Ikoedem added that 13 suspects had been arrested, and the case had been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured that justice would be served. He also appealed to residents of Ogheghe and surrounding communities to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating the command’s commitment to peace and order in Edo State.
