Fresh details have emerged in the ongoing investigation into an alleged coup plot, with sources revealing that an air force officer recently posted to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) was reportedly assigned to assassinate Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser.

According to sources familiar with the investigation who spoke to a newsman, the officer, Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu (service number NAF/3481) from Jigawa State, was deployed to the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) a programme under ONSA about four weeks before the alleged plot was uncovered.

Contrary to earlier reports that several suspects were working directly with ONSA, Adamu was said to be the only one linked to the office through the NCTC.

Military insiders disclosed that Maj. Gen. Adamu Garba Laka, the National Coordinator of the NCTC, had requested a specific officer be assigned to the centre in August 2025, but the request was denied. Instead, Squadron Leader Adamu was posted there a decision now fueling speculation that the alleged plotters may have infiltrated the military hierarchy.

Adamu, a member of Regular Course 59 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), was reportedly detailed to “take out” Ribadu, while other officers allegedly had separate high-profile targets, sources claimed.

He is said to be cooperating with investigators.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ), however, has not officially confirmed the alleged coup plot. In a statement released after the story first appeared on Sahara Reporters, DHQ maintained that the ongoing investigation involving 16 officers was a “routine internal process aimed at ensuring discipline and professionalism within the ranks.”

Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the findings of the investigation would be made public once concluded.

Meanwhile, reports have continued to surface in the media revealing the identities of officers currently being detained in connection with the alleged plot.

President Bola Tinubu recently dismissed two service chiefs, including former Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, in what many analysts believe was part of efforts to reorganize the nation’s security architecture following intelligence reports of internal disloyalty.
