The management of the Federal University of Benin, Edo State has informed students resident on campus to brace themselves for power outage following an announcement by Benin Electric Distribution Company (BEDC) of a planned distruption of power supply in some parts of the state for two months.

In a statement signed by the Federal institution’s dean of students, prof. Clement Atewe Ighodaro, the management revealed that the high cost of diesel may prevent them from providing an alternate source of power.

BEDC in a statement addressed to its customers on Friday, said the planned power disruption is due to a network upgrade exercise by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on the Ihovbor 132/33KV Transmission Station.

The affected areas are Ikpoba Hill, Benin Agbor Road, Auchi Road, Temboga, upper mission, Army signal, igiesota, Ikhuenero village and environs.

Others are Siloku road, New Benin market, Psychiatric hospital, Banks around Uniben, Okhoro Road, federal Road, Upper Lawani, Uteh village, Palace and environs.

Also affected are areas such as Adolor, FGGC road, Ugowo, Ekosodin, Ishor and environs.

The other affected areas are Ekiadolor, Uselu, Oluku, lwoya, Okhun, Utekon, Otokhore, Ora communities, Textile mill road, Egbor, Obanosa, Uwelu and environs.

The disruption will commence on Monday, 13th November 2023, and continue until 7th January 2024.

“The disruption is necessary to enable the replacement of an old 40MVA transformer with a new 1OOMVA transformer, which will increase the supply capacity to the affected areas,” BEDC stated.

The company has, however, apologized for the inconvenience caused by the power disruption.

They also said that they are working closely with the TCN team to ensure the exercise is completed as quickly as possible.
