SHETTIMA, GOVERNORS SET UP COMMITTEES ON CRUDE OIL THEFT AND ECONOMIC AFFAIRS

The Nigerian governors and Vice President Kashim Shettima have established committees to address economic matters and the theft and management of crude oil.
The National Economic Council (NEC) conducted its 138th virtual meeting on Thursday, during which this decision was made.
As per the announcement made by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, the committees will be led by Governors Abdul Rahman AbdulRazak of Kwara State and Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, respectively.
The conference, according to him, was called after “assessments of potential short-, medium-, and long-term strategies for addressing pressing economic issues” and “deliberations on critical economic matters.”
In addition to creating a framework for defending wage negotiations, managing the exchange rate and fiscal consolidation sustainability, managing liquidity and inflation, medium-term investment and growth, fiscal transparency and accountability, and declaring a state of emergency on food production for 2024, the Economic Matters committee is tasked with creating a clear roadmap for dealing with petroleum subsidies.
The governor of Gombe State, who represents the North East, and the governors of Lagos, South West, Akwa Ibom, South-South, Anambra, North Central, Niger, and Kaduna, North West, are among the members of the committee.
Rukaiya El-Rufai, the President’s Special Advisor on NEC and Climate Change, would be its Secretary.
A former NEC body, the Crude Oil Theft and Management body, was reorganised, with Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State serving as chair.
The governors of Ogun State (representing the South West), Plateau State (North Central), Borno (North East), Jigawa State (North West), Abia State (South East), Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, CBN Governor, GCEO of NNPCL, Chairman of the NDDC, and Service Chiefs are the other members.
Housing will be provided by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning for the secretariat. Dr. Tope Fasua, the President’s Special Advisor on Economic Matters, will be a committee member.
