Lagos unveils iconic fish statue in Ambode’s hometown
In its avowed drive to create aesthetic works of art and deploy them in strategic locations across the state, the Lagos State Government has erected the statue of an iconic fish in Epe, the hometown of Governor Akinwumi Ambode.
An electronic press release forwarded to the media states that the Special Adviser on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola, represented Ambode at the statue’s unveiling on Wednesday.
Called ‘The Fish’, the statue is erected at Lekki-Epe T-Junction in Epe Local Government Area.
Akinsola quoted Ambode as saying the iconic statue is a symbolic expression that celebrates the traditional disposition of the founding fathers of Epe as a generic community of fishermen, primarily because of its proximity to the lagoon.
“The Fish statue is a celebration of the communal economic activities which revolve around the vast potentials available in the coastal area, including fishing, marine transportation and job opportunities,” Ambode said.
Earlier in his remark, Chairman of Epe Local Government Area, Hon. Doyin Adesanya, said the siting of the monument at the Lekki-Epe T-Junction did not only signify Epe as the fish basket of Lagos State, but also that of the nation.
Mr. Bale Olorunju who represented the sculptor, Mr. Hamza Attah, in his narrative of the artwork said the monument depicted modern Epe as the collecting point for the export of fish in Lagos, noting that fishing is the major occupation of the people in Epeland.
