BREAKING: ROY HODGSON STEPS DOWN AS PALACE MANAGER, OLIVER GLASNER SETS TO TAKE OVER
Roy Hodgson has stepped down as Crystal Palace manager, with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner set to take over.
On Thursday, Hodgson, 76, was taken ill during training and then underwent tests in the hospital.
The club confirmed he is now out of the hospital and “doing well.”
In a club statement announcing his departure, Hodgson said: “I understand, given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead, and therefore I have taken the decision to step aside so that the club can bring forward their plans for a new manager, as intended for this summer.”
It is understood Glasner will take charge after that game and will be tasked with boosting the form of a Palace side that has won just six of their 24 league fixtures this season, with only three of those victories coming since a 1-0 success at Manchester United in September.
The Austrian – who started his coaching career with Austrian sides SV Ried and LASK before heading to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg – enjoyed success at Frankfurt, beating Rangers in the 2022 Europa League final before finishing runners-up in the German Cup the following season.
He was linked with the Tottenham vacancy last summer and was spotted watching on as Spurs lost to Wolves in the Premier League on Saturday, with Palace set to face their London rivals on March 2.
Hodgson took charge of his 200th match as Eagles manager last Monday, when his side were beaten 3-1 at Selhurst Park by Chelsea.
Disgruntled fans have displayed banners in recent weeks calling for Hodgson to be sacked and venting frustration with how the club is being run.
But Palace chairman Steve Parish said Hodgson “has a special place in Crystal Palace history and this will never be forgotten.”
Hodgson kept Palace in the Premier League for four consecutive campaigns, before returning to the club in March 2023 for the final 10 games of last season to “steady the ship”.
“Quite simply, we owe our continued Premier League status to Roy,” Parish said.
