NIGERIA: EDITORS GUILD CALLS FOR ACTION ON SECURITY, ABDUCTED JOURNALIST, AND ECONOMY
Nigeria’s Guild of Editors (NGE) is urging the government to ramp up efforts against the growing insecurity issues across the country. The statement came after a meeting in Enugu.
The guild acknowledged the recent release of kidnapped students in Kaduna but expressed concern about the abduction of a Lagos editor, Segun Olatunji, by unidentified armed men. They demanded his immediate release and condemned the act, emphasizing the importance of press freedom in a democracy.
The NGE also addressed the recent military deaths in Delta and called for a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences.
The statement further linked the worsening economic situation, with rising inflation, to the security issues, fuel subsidy removal, and currency devaluation. While acknowledging government efforts to address the economic hardship, the guild urged long-term solutions.

Finally, the NGE commended journalists for their perseverance and urged them to maintain professionalism and responsible reporting while covering the nation’s challenges.
