MINIMUM WAGE: NATIONWIDE STRIKE PARALYSES ACTIVITIES IN ENUGU
In Enugu State, there was complete compliance with the nationwide strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Commercial activity in Enugu State was halted as the strike began on Monday (today), following a standoff at the federal government’s meeting with the unions.
According to our correspondent, who visited some areas in Enugu, observed that banks were not rendering services to their customers, it was under lock and key.
It was also learned that workers from some government agencies who came to work early in the morning were forced out of their offices by labour leaders.
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu was also shut down in compliance with the nationwide strike declared by the NLC and TUC leadership.
It was learned that passengers waiting to catch their flight were chased away by workers.
However, both private and government schools also failed to observe the strike at the time of this report due to the ongoing West African Examination Council (WAEC) across the continent.
A civil servant who spoke on condition of anonymity blamed the federal government over the strike, saying that labour is fighting for the legitimate rights of workers.
“The Federal government is not getting it right. A civil servant salary can not pay the monthly transport fee. After paying your transport fee, how do you feed your wards, pay school fees and others. The Federal government proposed minimum wage can not buy a bag of rice,” he said.
