JUST IN: REPS ASK FG TO SUSPEND IMPLEMENTATION OF SAMOA AGREEMENT
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives urged the federal government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement signed recently, pending the conclusion of an investigation into the matter.
This came after the adoption of a motion by the Deputy Minority Leader, Aliyu Madaki, and 88 others, at Tuesday’s plenary, calling attention to some allegedly offensive clauses in the agreement.
The Samoa Agreement is the overarching legal framework for the European Union’s relations with 79 countries. This includes 48 African, 16 Caribbean, and 15 Pacific countries.
Recall that the federal government recently signed the Samoa Agreement, which has been trailed by controversy, with several Nigerians kicking against it.
Madaki, in his lead debate, said the agreement purportedly promotes LGBT rights, which are against existing laws in the country.
