Agency Report

The National Agency for Food Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has closed down a bakery for using unfortified sugar and banned bromate in Sokoto.

Mr. Garba Adamu, the NAFDAC State Coordinator, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that the bakery was discovered during a special raid by agency officials.

ā€œWe discovered that the bakery was using saccharine, an unregistered foreign sugar, as sweetener along with banned bromate in their productions.

ā€œThe items were seized for destruction, and the bakery is shut down until it complies with regulations and directives,ā€ he said.

Adamu emphasised that only fortified registered sugar containing vitamin ā€˜Aā€™ with micronutrients and other vitamins is allowed to be sold and consumed in Nigeria.

ā€This is a Federal Government policy enforced by NAFDAC and other government agencies to ensure that consumers get the maximum nutritional and other health benefits from the produced products.

ā€Six other bakeries were also sanctioned for poor hygiene as enforcement officers led by Mr Buhari Manzo scaled up the routine inspection visits to bakeries across the state.

ā€Bakeries are monitored to ensure that they donā€™t use saccharine or other banned items as a substitute to fortified regulated ingredients,ā€ Adamu said.

The coordinator reiterated that NAFDAC would always carry out the enforcement and advised producers not to use contaminated, counterfeit, unregistered, or expired commodities in their establishments.

As part of the organization’s efforts to make sure that hygienic foods are being marketed as well as the proper items were in circulation, Adamu announced that the operation will be expanded to local government regions.

He emphasised NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to protect the country’s health and urged the people to be cautious while purchasing unregistered goods and to always report any questionable activities or contaminations.
