PROTECT OR PROTEST: A CONCERNED CITIZEN’S DILEMMA
Adebayo Ilupeju
Recent discussions have been intense regarding whether to support the upcoming protests.
One faction believes the protest should focus on safeguarding our infrastructure while advocating for good governance.
Another group has outlined their demands, which include good governance, a reduced cost of living, improved roads, and other public services.
Examining these viewpoints, it is evident that the majority desire a more efficient and functional country.
Reports from X (Twitter) Spaces indicate that some individuals are escalating their demands and calling for the government’s overthrow. Unfortunately, these extreme views are not being addressed in public forums where the main discussions are happening.
The urgent need to lower commodity prices has overshadowed the fact that some individuals with malicious intentions aim to exploit the situation to disrupt peace and pursue their own agendas. Consequently, the government is expected to take firm action against those inciting anarchy. Protest organizers should clearly communicate the protest routes and actively prevent any attempts to hijack or carry out violent acts.
Security services must perform their duty to protect lives and property diligently and act on credible intelligence
