POLICE INCREASE SECURITY MEASURES IN BENUE
The Benue State Police Command has deployed its officers to strategic locations throughout Makurdi, the state capital.
Those who walked around the city on Monday, reported the presence of police.
The presence of police officers in the capital city could be linked to the planned hunger protests around the country, which will start on August 1.
Hyacinth Alia, the state governor, stated on Sunday that he had received promises from numerous groups, including student unions, market groups, organised labour, and other civil society organisations, that they would not join in hunger protests throughout the state.
Alia stated that the state has had enough instability in recent years and that it is no longer in its best interests to witness another protest that could be hijacked by hoodlums.
“And I’m grateful to organised labour in the state, student union, market union and others for being considerate not to participate in any protest that at the end of the day might be hijacked by hoodlums and our entire peace destabilised,” Alia had said.
While reacting, the state command’s spokesperson, Catherine Anene, allayed Benue people’ fears about the large number of policemen in the area.
Anene said, “The presence of police officers across Makurdi today is not to scare citizens but to assure them of police presence and warn any hoodlum who intends to cause a breach of peace in the name of protest.”
