The Department of State Services (DSS) has released Adejuwon Soyinka, a journalist and the West African Regional Editor of The Conversation Africa.

Soyinka previously served as the Pioneer Editor of the BBC Pidgin Service.

He was arrested by Nigeria’s secret police DSS at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at about 5.40 a.m. on Sunday, shortly after he arrived in Nigeria via a Virgin Atlantic flight from the United Kingdom.

Hours later, Soyinka announced his release to fellow journalists.

He said, “I have just been released by the DSS in Lagos.

“They are holding on to my passport, though. I am in an Uber ride ordered for me by the Deputy director of DSS in Lagos.”

The spokesperson for the DSS, Dr. Peter Ifunnaya had earlier said in an update he shared with PREMIUM TIMES that the secret police “intercepted” the journalist based on a request from another government agency.

“We are working on Adejuwon Soyinka’s case,” he confirmed in a text message.
