Lagos residents are being urged to support the implementation of the Lagos State Parking Policy (LASPA) by Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale, the chairman of the committee on transportation of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Along with several members of the House of Assembly Committee, including Hon. Yinka Esho (Mushin 2), Hon. Lukman Orelope (Alimosho 1), Hon. Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island 2), Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester (Epe 2), and some LAHA staff, he made the appeal on Tuesday during a working visit to the LASPA Office at Ikeja.

Adewale emphasized that the purpose of the committee’s visit was to underscore the significance of the parking policy for the growth of the state and to reaffirm the House of Assembly’s support to the authority’s objectives. He expressed his appreciation for the LASPA personnel and general manager’s professionalism and commitment to ending careless parking and reducing traffic congestion in Lagos caused by parking.

“We are here today on a courtesy visit to stay informed about your daily activities and operations. It is important to update committee members on the Authority’s activities and recent achievements, especially for our new members who need to familiarise themselves with your mandate”, Adewale stated.

The Chairman noted noticeable improvements, especially in the Central Business District (CBD), and expressed pleasure with the recent adjustments in parking management. He said that the installation of directional signage and lane markings has greatly improved parking efficiency and decreased traffic-related problems.

He praised LASPA’s achievements in off-street parking and gave the Authority confidence in their impending administration of regulated on-street parking, assuring the Authority of the committee’s willingness to provide all necessary support for the efficient execution of its mandate.

The LASPA General Manager, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, gave a brief overview of the Authority’s goals, operations, and accomplishments in addition to expressing her appreciation for the committee’s assistance.

While addressing some questions raised by members of the committee, Adelabu emphasised the Authority’s commitment to delivering quality service, saying, “We are intentional about quality service delivery. Parking can be quite contentious, especially with many hidden stakeholders previously managing it. The House plays a crucial role in our efforts, and we rely on your full backing to implement our policies effectively. We appreciate the consistent support from the House and look forward to its continuation”.

The general manager also talked about how local governments are involved in parking regulations and reiterated how valuable the partnership is between state and local government. She added that although residential property owners are not charged by the government for parking on their property, they are charged for using federal setbacks.

Additionally, Adelabu announced that the pilot phase of the on-street parking initiative will begin later this year, setting the stage for full operations in the coming year. “We are finalising the technical aspects and establishing a Command and Control Centre to ensure effective management. Everything is in place for that, and we believe it will redefine the space in Lagos”.

“Lane markings and signage installation are already ongoing in key areas, including Ikeja, Surulere, Ikoyi-Obalende, Victoria Island, and Lekki, to facilitate the upcoming on-street parking operations”, she added.

Adelabu, therefore, implored residents/vehicle owners interested in more detailed information on the regulated on-street parking scheme or parking-related inquiries to visit LASPA’s website or contact the Agency through 0700-00-LASPA (52772), 02-01-2275230 or 02-01-2275231.
