The Ogun State Police Command says it is on the trail of suspected cultists who allegedly killed a councillorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Adeyinka Adeleke, on Saturday.

The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Saturday.

PUNCH Online reported earlier that Adeleke was the councillorship candidate for Abeokuta South Local Government Ward 15 in the forthcoming November 16 local government elections.

It was gathered that the assailants stormed the area in a tinted car while shooting sporadically.

A source privy to the incident had disclosed that the gunmen attacked Adeleke, shot at him, and left him in the pool of his blood.

Confirming the incident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, Odutola disclosed that the assailants were suspected cultists.

She added that the incident occurred around 12:30 pm when the assailants, armed with a pump action shotgun and a pistol, stormed the area in an unregistered Toyota Corolla sports car.

The PPRO added that the assailants opened fire on Adeleke and left him dead at the scene.

She said, “On 12/10/2024, a shooting incident and murder occurred around 12:30 pm. A concerned citizen reported that unknown individuals, believed to be cultists, arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla sports car, armed with a pump action shotgun and a pistol, at Jide Jones, Oke-Ilewo in Ibara Abeokuta.

“The assailants opened fire, killing 40-year-old Adeyinka Adeleke, who was left dead at the scene before the perpetrators fled to an unknown location.”

She added that police operatives visited the scene of the incident and took photographs while a family of the deceased requested and took away the corpse without an autopsy.

She noted that an investigation has begun into the killing and efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects.

“Investigation into the gruesome killing has commenced and members of the public are assured of routine patrol. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects,” Odutola concluded.

It was reported in November 2023 that the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, had confirmed the killing of Mr Taiwo Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance and Accounts attached to the office of Governor Dapo Abiodun at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Alamutu had told newsmen that Oyekanmi was gunned down while returning from the bank where he had taken a bullion van to withdraw some funds for the state.

The CP had said the incident happened on the NNPC Bridge, near Kuto, Abeokuta.

Oyekanmi was said to have been rushed to the state hospital, Ijaye, where he was pronounced dead.
