EKITI COURT ORDERS REMAND OF HUMAN RIGHTS LAWYER FAROTIMI, CASE ADJOURNED TILL TUESDAY
Human rights attorney Dele Farotimi was ordered to be remanded to the state’s correctional facility on Wednesday by the Ado Ekiti Division of the Ekiti State Chief Magistrates Court.
After writing a book titled “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” in which he claimed, among other things, that Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had compromised the Supreme Court, Farotimi was charged with defamation of character.
After hearing the police prosecutor Samson Osubu’s 16-count accusation, to which Farotimi entered a not guilty plea, Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun postponed the case until December 10, 2024.
Farotimi was arraigned on Wednesday after being taken to Ado Ekiti by Ekiti State police officers who had detained him in Lagos on Monday.
Adeosun said, “The defendant should file a formal application for bail. The matter is adjourned till Tuesday, December 10, 2024. The defendant is hereby ordered remanded at the Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti.”
Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, the commissioner of police for Ekiti State, defended Farotimi’s detention on Tuesday for alleged defamation and cyberbullying.
According to the CP, Farotimi was accused of “defamation of character, cyberstalking and other things,” and the two accusations were “fully established.”
He said, “We are investigating him (Farotimi). If the suspect is arrested, we will bring him for investigation. We will conduct our investigation and will be able to know his level of culpability or otherwise.”
