The leadership of the Academy of Islamic Propagation expressed concerns on Wednesday about the misuse of social media in the country, pointing out that many users often violate the law through the content they post.

This statement was made in Osogbo on Wednesday by the Academy’s Vice President, Mr. U.S. Imam, while updating the press on the activities planned for the group’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Imam, a lawyer, mentioned that the Academy’s leader, Mallam Yusuf Adepoju, and his followers frequently face attacks from social media users. He emphasized that legal measures have largely been relied upon to safeguard the group and its members from online harassment.

He said, “In Nigeria, we are using social media unrestrictedly. Social media has no regulation, which is why it is being abused.

“We see people, and by the time we listen and watch their contents, we realize they have crossed the line; they would have fallen into the pit of defamation.

“Let me tell you, our leader, Mallam and ACADIP are being abused as well. But we have a way of protecting ourselves.”

Commenting on the activities for ACADIP’s 30th anniversary, successes and challenges that it contended with in the last three decades, Adepoju, who said over 15,000 reverts had been won into Islam globally during the period, added that inadequate funding and misconception of the ideals of the group among others constituted major hurdles.

Adepoju highlighted that as part of the 30th-anniversary celebrations, there would be visits to hospitals, orphanages, and correctional facilities in communities where ACADIP operates across Nigeria, culminating in a special Jumaat Service.

He added that 50 distinguished comparative scholars and religious leaders would be honored with awards of excellence during an event at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan. The five-day event would wrap up with a fundraising drive for the proposed ACADIP University and the presentation of special awards to the Asiwaju Musulumi of Oyo State, Alhaji Mutiullah Oladejo, and three other individuals.
