A former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Usman Yusuf, has been charged with five revised counts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that include allegations of fraud.

Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja, heard Usman Yusuf’s arraignment.

After being read the charges, the defendant entered a not guilty plea.

O.I. Habeeb, the defendant’s attorney, then asked that his client be placed under remand in the EFCC’s custody while the bail application was being heard.

However, Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu, the trial judge, noted that the defendant was no longer under the EFCC’s custody after he was arraigned.

She then ordered Yusuf to be imprisoned in the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja until his bail plea was heard, and she postponed the matter to February 12, 2025.

Between 2016 and 2017, the former NHIS Executive Secretary is accused of abusing his position to give himself unfair advantages.

Additionally, he is accused of awarding contracts without adhering to the proper procurement procedure.
