WORLD NEWS: GUNMEN KILL EIGHT IN CENTRAL MEXICO
Authorities in Mexico’s most violent state said on Sunday that eight individuals had been shot dead by gunmen.
According to the prosecutor’s office, three men and five women—who have not been named—were slain in the street in Guanajuato on Saturday night.
According to official homicide figures, Guanajuato is regarded as Mexico’s most deadly state despite being a prosperous industrial centre and the location of some well-liked tourist attractions.
The gunmen are still at large.
In 2023, gunmen raided a water park in the municipality of Cortazar, where they killed seven people, including a kid.
A man in Guanajuato who was recognised by the local media as the head of hitmen for the Santa Rosa de Lima cartel was taken into custody by the National Guard on Sunday.
Violence in Guanajuato is linked to ongoing conflict between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the most powerful in the Latin American nation.
Drug-related violence has seen more than 480,000 people killed in Mexico since the government deployed the army to combat trafficking in 2006, according to official figures.
