46 PEOPLE KILLED IN SUDANESE ARMY PLANE CRASH IN OMDURMAN
A Sudanese army plane crashed on Tuesday in a residential area near the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, killing at least 46 people, including both military personnel and civilians.
The Antonov aircraft is reported to have crashed late Tuesday while taking off from the Wadi Seidna military airport, located in the northern part of Omdurman, within the greater Khartoum area.
On Wednesday, the Khartoum Media Office confirmed that the crash also left 10 others injured.
Initially, the health ministry reported 20 deaths, stating that the aircraft went down over a civilian home in Omdurman’s Karrari district.
It was also revealed that Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum, was among those killed.
The Sudanese military, engaged in ongoing conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, issued a statement confirming the deaths of both military members and civilians and stated that firefighting teams had successfully controlled the blaze at the crash site.
Witnesses in northern Omdurman described hearing a loud explosion from the crash, which damaged several homes and caused power outages in nearby areas.
At the time of this report, the cause of the crash remains unknown.
