FOUR REPORTED KILLED IN CULT RELATED CASES IN OGUN STATE

Members of the banned Eiye and Aye fraternities engaged in renewed cult conflicts in Ogun State’s Alogi, Somorin, and Obantoko communities on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of around four people.

The prohibited organizations attacked and retaliated against specific members during the concurrent battles.

According to information our correspondent obtained from several eyewitnesses, the battles started when several Eiye gang members attacked and killed an Aye group member. In retaliation, the Aye group members attacked the Eiye group, killing another member in the process.

Various eyewitness stories made it impossible to determine the exact number of victims at the time of this article, although it was reported that the conflicts had claimed lives.

Four people were killed in the altercation, according to an eyewitness who talked to our correspondent on Sunday under the condition of anonymity.

The cultists who went on a rampage in the Aregbe area, according to the eyewitness, shot intermittently, killing roughly four people.

The source said, “Initially, I thought cultists’ rampage thrived more in Lagos than any state in Nigeria, but what I witnessed on Saturday in Ogun State had proved me wrong. Indeed, I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t witness it.

“I am presently in Ogun State on an assignment, staying somewhere around Aregbe close to the state police headquarters. In that area, there is a Divisional Police Command. I went to buy some toiletries near the division this evening. Suddenly, I saw the DPO with some of his boys moving in a war-like manner responding to a distress call.

“I immediately swung into action to know what happened. There, I saw deadly cult clashes involving the Aye and Eiye boys. Four of the cultists were felled by bullets in Somorin, Anobi and Alogi all in Obantoko under the Adatan Area Command.”

Another source privy to the incident, however, claimed that only two persons were killed in the clash.

The source stated that the simultaneous clashes caused panic among the local population.

“A cult violence took place in Abeokuta between Eiye and Aye cult groups, leading to revenge and retaliation. The first incident occurred in Somorin, Obantoko, where an Eiye cultist allegedly took the life of one Yusuf suspected to be a member of the Aye cult group.

“When the news of his death spread to members of his group, the Aye cultists in a retaliatory attack targeted and killed an Eiye cultist named Sula at Alogi, Obantoko.

The two incidents left residents of the area in a panic mood and occurred at almost the same time.”

Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the clashes when asked for a response on Sunday.

“Yes, there was,” Odutola said in a terse message.

However, when our correspondent subsequently asked her how many people were killed in the conflict, she did not reply.

Residents in the state’s Alogi, Somorin, and Obantoko regions are still concerned about the ongoing cult conflict.

One Azeez Olaitan was killed in a retaliatory cult conflict in the state’s Alogi district in April 2024 after being attacked by alleged Aiye Confraternity members.

According to information our correspondent obtained from a local resident who requested anonymity, the altercation resulted from the Eiye fraternity’s attack on a suspected Aiye member the same day.
