REPS MOVE TO EXPOSE DEADLY CHEMICALS IN FROZEN FOODS

Read Time:1 Minute, 24 Second

The House of Representatives has resolved to investigate the alleged use of dangerous chemical substances in the preservation of frozen foods across Nigeria.

The decision followed growing public concern over reports that some food processors and importers use toxic chemicals to prolong the shelf life of frozen products instead of relying on approved preservation methods.

Lawmakers expressed worry that some of these substances could pose serious health risks to consumers, ranging from respiratory issues and liver damage to cancer.

The House has mandated its relevant committees to determine which chemicals are being used, identify those responsible, and verify whether the substances are permitted under Nigeria’s food safety regulations. The committees are also expected to assess how widespread the practice is among frozen food producers, importers, and distributors, as well as its potential impact on public health.

The resolution directs the committees to recommend sanctions, regulatory reforms, or enforcement measures to curb the use of harmful preservatives and to report back to the House within a stipulated time.

Although specific chemicals were not mentioned, similar incidents in the past have revealed the use of formaldehyde and other unapproved substances in smuggled poultry and other frozen foods. Experts have repeatedly warned that such chemicals, often used to mask spoilage, can lead to serious health problems when consumed over time.

Consumer groups and health advocates have welcomed the House’s move, urging swift action to protect Nigerians and ensure that only safe food products are sold in the country.

The investigation is expected to lead to stricter regulations, tougher penalties for offenders, and improved monitoring of the food supply chain to safeguard public health.
