Joseph Omoniyi
Angry residents of Massey street,Ita-faji area of Lagos-Island, location of the recent building collapse, have decried the poor housing conditions and high rate of rentage in the area, saying it is one of the major reasons occupants risk their lives living in crappy residential apartments:
Some of them who spoke with hotjist.com at the scene of the incident, said some agents charge up to about N200, 000 – to – N500, 000 for “agreement and commission” for ‘a room and parlour self contained apartment’.
Another respondent speaking with Hotjist said corrupt government officials and ‘devilish house owners’ are majorly responsible for building collapse disasters.
A resident whose residential apartment is right beside the collapsed building, Mrs Adunni however appealed to the Lagos government to provide quality, conducive and affordable housing for Lagosians in order to prevent people from living under waiting disasters in form of buildings.
