QATAR ’22 WORLD CUP ‘VAGINA STADIUM’ FINALLY COMPLETED
Joseph Omoniyi
Qatar’s 2022 World Cup stadium widely tagged ‘Vagina Stadium’ by internet critics because of its shape, has finally been completed and unveiled.
The Al Wakrah was designed by a British-Iraqi architect, Dame Zaha Hadid, who died suddenly of a heart attack in 2016, aged 65.
The stadium will host matches right up to the quarter-finals and can hold up to 40,000 fans.
Hadid’s design of the stadium was said to have been inspired by the shape of a dhow boat. The Arabian vessels are traditionally used for pearl diving and fishing. But, in classic ‘internet’ style, people compared the ‘sails’ on the top of the stadium to a massive vagina.
Condemning critic’s perception of the stadium, Hadid said: “It’s really embarrassing that they come up with nonsense like this.
“What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vagina? That’s ridiculous.”
‘If a guy had done this project there wouldn’t have been the same level of criticism’, she added.
Her other works included the Aquatics Centre at the 2012 London Olympics, the MAXXI Museum in Italy and the Guangzhou Opera House in China – added:
