English champions Leicester have completed the signing of Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi from Belgian side Genk, the club stated on their website on Tuesday.
He joins international teammate Ahmed Musa at the King Power Stadium for a reported £15m.
Ndidi passed a medical and agreed a five-and-a-half-year contract, and Leicester expect the formalities to be completed later in the week.
“Leicester City can today (Tuesday) confirm that an agreement has been reached with KRC Genk for the permanent transfer of Wilfred Ndidi,” the Foxes stated on their website.
He is seen as the perfect replacement for N’Golo Kante, who left for Chelsea after their EPL triumph last season.
The midfielder, 20, has agreed personal terms, undergone a medical and will sign a contract to June 2022 once a work permit has officially been granted.
“The Foxes beat off considerable competition to secure Ndidi’s signature – the tall, combative central midfielder having won a host of admirers across Europe for his performances both in the Belgian Pro League and in the UEFA Europa League, where he helped Genk progress to this season’s knockout stages as Group F winners,” Leicester added.
Ex-Eagles stars Victor Agali and Efe Sodje hailed the high-profile move but are hoping Ndidi adapts to the EPL on time.
“It’s a good move for the youngster but the EPL is very tough; the manager needs to be patient with him. The manager hasn’t been patient with Musa and I’m afraid he may have the same problem but I just hope he puts up an exceptional display in his first two games. That will help him,” Agali stated.
Sodje said, “I havent heard of him (Ndidi) before but I think it’s a nice move. But it will be hard; that is the Premiership. He will take time to adapt because it is a high-intensity league.Look at Musa, a wonderful player, but he’s not playing regularly at the moment.”
Ndidi, who will wear City’s no.25 shirt, spent two years in Belgium after joining Genk as a teenager and helped the club reach the knockout stages of this season’s Europa League.
At international level, Ndidi represented Nigeria at U-17 and U-20 levels, before earning his first senior call-up in October 2015.
