TINUBU CAUTIONS POLICE OFFICERS ABOUT WIDESPREAD ABUSE AND INTIMIDATION
By Jen Nomamiukor
The Nigeria Police Force officers and men have been cautioned by President Bola Tinubu not to intimidate or mistreat the people they are hired to protect, emphasizing that they must enforce the rule of law and condemn any wrongdoing.
This was said by Tinubu during Wednesday night’s second annual IGP Award and Commendation ceremony in Abuja. Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Senate, represented the president.
“Remember that your authority is for protection, not intimidation. It is for service not misuse, the highest standards of professionalism and accountability”. “Preserve the rule of law, defend each citizen’s rights, and oppose corruption and wrongdoing in all its manifestations.” Only then will we be able to create a police force that the public genuinely respects and trusts.
“I must also charge every police officer, whatever of level or assignment, to respect the sacred trust put upon you by the Nigerian people,” he said, adding that “the federal government would continue to do its bit.” In order to improve operational efficiency and raise morale among all levels of the organization, we will keep funding the provision of state-of-the-art equipment, technological assistance, capacity-building initiatives, and welfare programs. Let your example inspire others within the Force to emulate your discipline, your hard work, your professionalism, and your integrity.
The Nigeria Police Force remains an essential pillar in our national security architecture. From the cities to the hinterlands, from preventing crime to responding in times of crisis, our police officers play a central role in enforcing law and order, upholding justice, and fostering trust between the state and the citizens. Therefore, the relationship between the police and the communities they serve is crucial. “This ceremony is more than a moment of celebration. It is a call to renewed service. It is a call to every officer in the Nigeria Police Force to reflect on the values we must uphold and the future we must build together.”

“We are not blind to the issues that face us,” stated Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun in his welcome remarks. The police must embrace innovation, utilize digital intelligence, adopt global best practices, and engage in constant training since dangers like as terrorism, cybercrime, kidnapping, and organized criminal networks are always changing. Nigerian policing must become more intelligent, quicker, trustworthy, and shamelessly people-focused in the future.
“We can’t win this battle by ourselves. The trust of the people we serve is our most valuable asset. Legitimacy is necessary for efficacy. Community collaboration is still the foundation of our activities because of this. We must go back to the core of our mission: to serve with compassion and to protect. The IGP congratulated the awardees, saying, “The officers we celebrate today are not extraordinary because of fame or fortune. They are extraordinary because of their refusal to be ordinary.” From patrol officers who brave the night to keep our cities safe to detectives who meticulously crack syndicates, you are the embodiment of quiet heroism, and tonight, we stand in tribute to your legacy.” The Awards and Commendation Ceremony stands today as a bold symbol of our institutional shift: from entitlement to merit, from routine to excellence. This year’s award process was a purposeful, thorough, and transparent effort to institutionalize merit within the Nigeria Police Force.
“The officers honored this evening did not submit an application for honors. They gained it via extraordinary bravery, moral behavior, outstanding leadership, and unwavering commitment. “To everyone who received an award, you have become the ambassadors of a reimagined Nigeria Police Force. Be humble and fiercely determined to do even more as you carry this honor. Wear your honor as a torch to illuminate the way to greater honor for those who follow you, rather than as a trophy. “And to those who did not get an award tonight, allow this event to inspire your aspirations.” Excellence is a daily norm rather than a destination. Nothing less is acceptable to us”
