Nigerian police defy BBOG’s 72-hour ultimatum, disperse group with teargas
Nigerian police have dispersed the campaigners for the return of the abducted Chibok schoolgirls, Bring Back our Girls, when they attempted to hold a sit-out at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Monday.
Recall that the FCT Police Command had placed an indefinite ban on all protests and sit-outs within Abuja metropolis, especially as protests by the Shiites group, who are agitating for the release of their leader, Ibrahim Al-Zakzaky, have continued to gather momentum.
Apparently angered by the police’s stance, the group, therefore, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Police to unseal their protest venue.
However, on the expiration of the 72-hour ultimatum, the group again converged at their routine sit-out venue, Unity Fountain, only for them to be dispersed with a teargas by the police.
The group, thereafter, took to its Twitter handle @BBOG_Nigeria to post a video of police officers using tear gas to harass them.
However, Jeff Okoroafor, a member of the group said despite the attack on members on Monday, the group will come out to protest today by 4.30pm
