CAF NATIONS CUP QUALIFIER: SUPER EAGLES-LIBYA GAME MOVED TO UYO
By Joseph Omoniyi
Nigeria are expected to move their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya from Kaduna after the Ahmadu Bello Stadium failed a pitch inspection.
Last month, the NFF had announced Kaduna as the venue for the qualifier following an inspection by Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr. At the time, the pitch looked in perfect condition.
However, a second inspection last week showed a marked deterioration in the condition of the pitch.
With the game less than three weeks away, the NFF made the decision to move the game to Uyo, where the Super Eagles have played the majority of their qualifiers.
Reports said that, an NFF delegation visited the Uyo Stadium last week and found the pitch, which had also a suffered tear-up in the wake of a political rally, in restored condition.
Oral approval has also been received from the Akwa Ibom State government, owners of the stadium. The NFF has written to the Confederation of African Football and to the Libyan football federation intimating them of the change.
An official announcement is expected within the next week.
Nigeria currently lie third in the group behind Libya and South Africa, and need a minimum of four points in next month’s double-header against the Libyans to put themselves on track for qualification.
