The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Unarmed Danbatta, stated this in Abuja, on Thursday during a Workshop on the future of industry: Driving Innovation and Growth organised in conjunction with the Global System for mobile Telecommunications Association (GSMA).
Danbatta said as the country is working towards the perfection of its 3G and 4G “we shouldn’t be left behind, as other countries are already in tune with 5G. We must also make efforts to get ourselves ready for the next generation network. ”
He explained that the issues that affect growth and innovation in the Telecom industry are government policies, regulation and performance of the networks.
According to him, to promote innovation and growth in this industry, as a requirement, “therefore, we must develop strategic policies, provide essential infrastructure, enhance competitive market, robust regulatory frameworks, and focused compliance monitoring and enforcement mechanism, reform our spectrum access mechanisms, among others.”
The Head of sub-Saharan Africa, GSMA, Akinwale Good luck, when delivering his opening speech noted that there is nothing preventing Nigeria from meeting up with 5G standards, as all that is needed, is to simply improve the nation’s infrastructure and enhance good policies.
