‘ANTHONY JOSHUA’S…PRETTY AWFUL’ – FURY’S PROMOTER

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Frank Warren, the lead promoter for heavyweight Tyson Fury, was shocked at Saturday’s massive upset.

Warren watched Anthony Joshua make his United States debut and get blasted out under Andy Ruiz’s heavy fists.

After visiting the canvas four times inside seven rounds, a dream American debut at Madison Square Garden unravelling into an unforeseeable nightmare, the former IBF, WBA, IBO and WBO world heavyweight champion emerged for a delayed post-fight news conference with a smile and good manners.

Warren was also surprised at Joshua smiling and having the appearance of someone who was happy after the loss.

The veteran promoter believes Joshua is chinny and has very severe defensive flaws in his game.

Joshua dropped Ruiz in the third round, but then tried to go for the finish and was rocked bad and dropped twice in the same round. Ruiz remained patient, picking his punches and digging to Joshua’s body in the sixth. And then Ruiz unloaded with combinations to drop Joshua two more times for the finish in the seventh.

“After the fight, he didn’t seem very upset at losing his title. I was very disappointed. I’m not saying you should be a bad sportsman, but it was like he was relieved to get out of there. I was surprised it was Ruiz who did it. Joshua is easy to hit. His defense is pretty awful and it hasn’t improved at all since he turned professional,” Warren told BBC Sport.

“When he was an amateur, I thought he was outstanding, but as a professional, they have not really worked hard on his defence. He’s wobbled in the past four or five fights and this guy – who’s got fast hands – totally exposed him. The problem is that once he gets in the ring and the bell goes, that chin of his is exposed.”
