FREDDIE LJUNBERG SET TO JOIN EMERY’S COACHING STAFF NEXT SEASON
After a poor first season campaign for Unai Emery at the Emirates, Arsenal are set to appoint club legend, Freddie Ljunberg in the first team coaching staff next season.
The 42-year-old Swedish, returned to the club as coach of the under-23s last summer after a spell in Germany on Wolfsburg’s staff.
He has made a big impression on Emery, who is preparing to make changes after a promising first season at the Emirates Stadium petered out.
Arsenal were emphatically beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in last week’s Europa League final in Baku and failed to qualify for the Champions League having finished fifth in the Premier League.
Juan Carlos Carcedo and Pablo Villanueva, the coaches who followed Emery from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, will remain at Arsenal in their existing roles, with Ljungberg viewed as a significant addition.
Steve Bould, the assistant coach, will also stay on at the club, although he may be given a different role that is still a matter of discussion between him and his employers.
Ljungberg made 325 appearances and scored 71 goals for Arsenal between 1998 to 2007. He began his coaching career at Arsenal with the under-15s in 2016 and joined Wolfsburg in 2017 after ending his 20-year playing career with Mumbai City in India five years ago.
He is highly rated at the club and is one of the few former players to have impressed Emery and his predecessor Arsène Wenger. When Emery arrived last summer he was keen to break with the past and removed a number of coaches, including Jens Lehmann, the former Arsenal goalkeeper.
