NEWS UPDATE: HEAVY SECURITY IN PLATEAU STATE PRISON AFTER KUJE ATTACK

Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second

Tight security is in place in and around the Correctional Centre in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, on Wednesday following the attacks by gunmen believed to be Boko Haram members at Kuje Correctional Centre on Tuesday night, which resulted in the escape of over 600 prisoners.

When our correspondent visited the institution on Wednesday afternoon, the entrance to the correctional center, which is located across from the Police Command Headquarters, was blocked off with an iron bar.

Vehicles on the route were seen to be let pass only after being thoroughly searched by security personnel manning the checkpoint.

The prison’s grounds were patrolled by armed agents from the Department of the State Security Service and other security personnel. The prison’s roofs, which were removed a few months ago for renovations, have still not been rebuilt.

It was unsuccessful to communicate with the spokesman for the Nigeria Correctional Service’s Plateau State Command.

Under the condition of anonymity, a senior official of the service told The PUNCH in Jos on Wednesday that they were not taking the security breach at the Kuje for granted.

The source questioned: What else do you want us to do but tighten security in this area?

You are aware of how courageous the perpetrators of the attack on the Kuje prison were. Because we don’t want what happened in Kuje to happen again at the Jos Correctional Center, Nigerians are talking about it and we aren’t taking it for granted.

I’m sure other prisons across the nation may have gone above and above to secure their buildings. Furthermore, you are aware that a similar attack occurred recently at the Jos Correctional Centre in November of last year, during which over 200 prisoners also managed to flee and others were killed by gunmen.

I’m aware that a search team was assembled following the incident to apprehend the evading prisoners, but I’m unsure if all of them have been apprehended as of yet. Therefore, you may understand why we are acting the way we are if you notice an unusual security presence near Jos Correctional Centre, especially given the security challenge we are currently facing.

Alabo Alfred, the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesman, added that the command was doing everything possible to guarantee sufficient security in the state.

In order to prevent attacks on the headquarters and other facilities, the commissioner of police always deploys officers. Perhaps the attack on Kuje jail is just a clue to what we have been doing, as it is usual for the CP to protect the security of persons and property in the state, the PPRO continued. If you notice, additional police troops are deployed to the command headquarters or elsewhere.
