BUHARI WARNS SECURITY AGENCIES NOT TO “UNDERMINE DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES”

With only eight weeks until the presidential elections in 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) warned security agencies on Wednesday to avoid actions that could jeopardize the democratic process.
He stated that those in charge of handling sensitive election materials must maintain a high level of professionalism in their work.
Buhari said this when he inaugurated the Defence Intelligence Agency’s newly acquired Estate in Idu-Karmo, Abuja, according to a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
The statement is titled ‘2023 elections: President Buhari charges security agencies to maintain professionalism in handling and distribution of classified materials’.
The President urged the agencies to handle classified materials distribution and monitoring “professionally and in accordance with Standing Operation Procedures.”
Reiterating his earlier directive to security agencies to remain apolitical, the President stated that they must refrain from conduct that could bring disrepute to their organizations and the country “by compromising the democratic process.”
The President stated that the newly acquired DIA Estate would improve productivity and coordination of activities of the Agency’s staff in light of the growing number of personnel who will face new challenges and responsibilities.
However, he warned that the facility would not provide the expected benefits unless it was properly maintained.
“By making the connection, the significance of today’s event can be better understood.”
“I am confident that these new premises will yield enormous shelter dividends to the Defence Intelligence Agency staff, their families and to the host locality.
“Acquiring this accommodation is a significant step forward, but the anticipated benefits would be lost without diligent maintenance,” he said.
As a result, Buhari urged the new occupants to maintain the facility’s high standards.
While congratulating the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Maj. Gen. Samuel Adebayo, on the accomplishment, Buhari stated that the DIA’s investment in staff housing complemented his government’s vision of improved national security.
In his remarks, the CDI thanked Buhari for inaugurating the new Estate, noting that the project would be remembered as the President’s legacy gift to the DIA community.
According to Adebayo, the newly inaugurated staff quarters include 16 three-bedroom terrace buildings with boys’ quarters and 48 three-bedroom flats, all of which are in suite.
He went on to say that one of the six-unit flat blocks and two-unit terrace buildings had been furnished as a prototype, while the rest would be furnished during the fiscal year 2023 implementation cycle.
Regarding the Agency’s operations, Adebayo thanked the President for approving their requests for technical intelligence and advanced technological acquisitions.
He announced that the majority of the newly acquired technical equipment had been deployed and was assisting in addressing the country’s security challenges.
