Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the president-elect, has expressed condolences to the family of former Chief of General Staff, Lt. General Oladipo Diya, who died on Sunday morning.
Diya, he said, would be remembered for his patriotism and commitment to the country.
According to his son, Sinmi Diya, General Diya died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 79.
The former Nigerian number one citizen served as military governor of Ogun State, where he was born, and held many military positions before becoming Chief of General Staff in 1993, as the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha’s second in command.
While mourning the retired general’s death, Tinubu lauded his services to national progress and the military institution.
“The news of General Oladipo Diya’s death came as a shock to me early this morning,” he added. “I extend my heartfelt condolences and condolences to his immediate family, particularly his wives and children.”
General Diya led a tremendous soldier’s life and made his imprint in the military, where he dutifully served our country. He served meritoriously as Military Governor of Ogun State and in the many military positions he held till he climbed to the coveted position of Chief of General Staff and second in command to the Head of State.
“As much as he could, he played a stabilising role during one of the most turbulent periods in our nation’s life in the aftermath of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He will be remembered for his patriotism and service to the nation.
“My condolences to Governor Dapo Abiodun and the people of Ogun State. I pray that Almighty Allah comforts his family and all those he left behind. May God Almighty grant his soul eternal rest.”
