Rev Chris Okotie, a former presidential contender, has requested the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, to show mercy to Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti in his battle with the police.

The outspoken musician is being held for punching a police officer during a traffic stop lately, which has sparked outrage across the country.

Rev Okotie made a plea for amnesty for the beleaguered music singer in a statement posted in Lagos yesterday by his media assistant, Ladi Ayodeji.

“I would like to urge the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to show paternal clemency towards Seun Kuti in his transgression against an authorized myrmidon of the law,” he said.Anti-establishment sentiment, in any form, is unacceptable, “The youth have been under tremendous pressure to establish a new Nigerian social order, and Seun’s abrasive behavior is a tangent from that trajectory,” says one observer.

I begged the IGP to temper justice with charity and clear Seun of all charges. Femi and Seun Kuti are artistic keepsakes left upon us by the renowned Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, and we sincerely appreciate the creative craftsmanship displayed in their musical genre. Please find enough grace in your heart to dull the pain of this provocation.

“May the God of heaven’s blessing be vouchsafed to you in the abundance of His Grace.”

Okotie’s message came after the judge extended Seun’s incarceration by four days
