ONE DEAD, SEVERAL HOUSES BURNT IN BENUE COMMUNAL CLASH
In a reoccurring altercation between the Mbasombo and Mbaivur villages of Ikpayongo in the Gwer East local government area of Benue State, one person has reportedly been killed and other homes have been set on fire.
The killing of a young man on his farm recently rekindled a long-running dispute between the two villages.
According to reports, the Mbaivur people assaulted the Mbasombo hamlet before dawn on Tuesday in retaliation for the death of their son on Friday, destroying many homes in the process.
The attack on Mbasombo was reported on Tuesday by a resident of Mbaivur who desired to remain nameless. The eyewitness claimed that after learning of their son’s death, the Mbaivur community asked that the murderers be brought to justice within 48 hours.
The Mbaivur people launched a retaliation attack since the Mbasombo people were unable to identify the individuals who killed the young farmer as of this morning, he claimed.
The eyewitness added that five Mbaivur citizens had already been slaughtered before the young farmer was killed last Friday.
“The corpses were kept in the mortuary, and when this man was killed on his farm last Friday, Mbaivur people removed the other corpses from the mortuary and went and buried them,” he added
According to the eyewitness, the Mbaivur community launched a revenge attack on the Mbasombo people on Tuesday, resulting in the destruction of a market square and numerous homes.
When contacted on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident and said that several houses were burnt but there were no casualties.
“Yes, there was a crisis in the area (Ikpayongo) several houses were burnt but policemen have been dispatched to the area to maintain peace,” Anene said.
