Two separate fire incidents on Wednesday razed 14 shops at Ogundipe Market and a residential building in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incidents in a statement.

At Ogundipe Market, Akinwande said fire service personnel, led by CFS Olayiwola T.K., responded swiftly to a distress call and found 14 out of 42 shops engulfed in flames. He noted that the fire was curtailed before it could spread further, with no casualties recorded. Properties worth billions of naira were said to have been saved, while an investigation has been launched to determine the cause.

Akinwande urged traders to be more fire-conscious and to equip their shops with extinguishers to tackle such outbreaks at the early stage.

In a separate incident, a four-bedroom flat and an adjoining two-bathroom flat at Ifesowapo Maternity, Zone 2, Ajoda, Egbeda LGA, were destroyed by fire in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to Akinwande, firemen led by ACFS Adisa Wasiu responded at 12:42 a.m. and prevented the flames from spreading to nearby buildings. Although no lives were lost, properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The fire was attributed to an electrical surge from an unattended plugged appliance. Akinwande cautioned residents to always switch off and unplug electrical devices when not in use to prevent similar tragedies.
