A 45-year-old woman, Taiye Abass, has been paraded by the Lagos State Police Command, for allegedly using her 10-year-old niece, as a courier to transport a particular kind of hard drugs known as Colorado to her customers.

The suspect, who admitted to the crime while being interrogated at the State Command Headquarters, on Tuesday, said that she puts the drugs in the underwear of her niece for easy movement to her destination of sale and also to avoid being apprehended by police officers at the checkpoint.

She said, “When I went to Ilorin, my mother asked me to bring her with me to Lagos about two months ago. I sell drinks. When she got to my place, feeding was hard. Where I usually take my drinks for sale, somebody then introduced me to Colorado that I should be selling it. He told me the police always arrested people selling it. So whenever I am taking the drinks for sale, I usually put it (the drug) in her underwear, and ask her to put it in the shop where I always collect it back from her.”

Abass who pleaded for forgiveness, begged saying it was because of hardship that she ventured into the business and that she had not even made any sales on her purchase, adding that other accomplices had run away by the time they went back to look for them.

Meanwhile, the 10-year-old narrated that she was living with her Aunt, who is an elder sister to her mother, and also that after taking her bath in the morning, her aunty would prepare her and then put the hard drugs in her underwear, which she collects on arrival at the shop.

While giving an account of her experience, she said, “I was found when I left the house. So, when I was trying to take my bathe, they found the drugs in my body. They asked me how the drugs got to my body and I told her that it is the mummy that i’m living with that kept it in my body. It’s not up to two months that I came to my Aunty’s house.

When I wake up, I will take my bath, she will get me prepared and then put the drugs in my body. She collects it when we get to the shop where she sells it. I don’t know who she gives or sells it to and i don’t know where she buys it.”

She also, said that her aunty mentioned that, the reason why she keeps the drugs in her underwear is because, the police cannot search her.

“My aunty tells me that she keeps it with me because, police cannot search me but they can search her.”

The Command’s Spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, while speaking to the press, disclosed that the 10-year-old was found wandering around the street, and brought to the Police Station (Pencinema Division), by a good neighbor while adding that, the substance suspected to be hard drugs was found in the little girl’s panties while she was being taken care of.

He said, “The girl was taken to the Police station because she apparently looked lost, and could not find her way back home. It was at the police station that she complained that she was being maltreated and ran away at the first opportunity of running errands. While trying to take care of the child, it was discovered that drugs was hidden in her panties. That prompted further questions which revealed that it had been an ongoing occurrence with the girl.

So, we had to extend investigation to her home and we were able to bring her guardian to the Station, and good enough, she admitted that it had been her way to courier her drugs from home to the shop were she eventually sells them.”

He urged that people should watch out and further collaborate with the Police, in the fight against illicit drugs and other crimes in the society.

Hundeyin also added that the girl will be handed over to her family whom the police had established contacts while the woman in questkion will be prosecuted accordingly.
