The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested and detained the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in charge of Financial System Stability, Aisha Ahmad, over the alleged fraudulent acquisition of shares in Polaris Bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank.
The CBN Deputy Governor is currently being interrogated on how $300 million to complete the acquisition of Union Bank was raised by Titan Bank.
Ahmad, who was relatively unknown until late 2007, trained as an accountant, financial analyst and financial manager. She was appointed CBN Deputy Governor by President Muhammadu Buhari on October 6, 2017 but her appointment was not confirmed by the Senate until March 22, 2018. She replaced Mrs. Sarah Alade, who retired in March 2017. Before joining the CBN, she served as the Head, Consumer Banking & Investment at Diamond Bank.
There have been several allegations  of impropriety about the handling of the foreign exchange market under the leadership of suspended Governor of the CBN, Godwin Emefiele.
