An automobile accident in the Itu local government area of Akwa Ibom State resulted in the confirmed deaths of three people—two girls and one male—and one injury.

Around five in the morning on Saturday, a Mack truck with the licence plate KMM412XA and a tricycle with the licence plate ETN815WR were involved in an accident on Itu-Uyo Road.

According to a statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps’ Akwa Ibom State Command, its agents have taken the injured to the hospital so they may receive immediate medical assistance, while the bodies of the deceased have been placed in a mortuary.

The statement, written by the command’s public enlightenment officer, Paul James, attributed the accident to the tricyclist’s velocity and both cars’ insufficient lighting systems, which prevented clear visibility.

The statement read, “A fatal crash occurred today, Saturday 21st October, 2023 along Itu – Uyo road at about 0555hrs, involving a Mack Truck with registration number KMM412XA and a Tricycle (Keke) with registration number ETN815WR.

“Three females and one male, all adults, were involved, and two out of the three females and one male were confirmed dead, while one of the females sustained injuries.

“FRSC operatives mobilized and moved over swiftly to attend to the situation. Upon arrival at the crash scene, the injured were moved to a nearby hospital for prompt medical attention while the deceased were deposited at a morgue.

It added, “When an inquiry was made as to the cause of the crash, it was gathered that the causal factors to the crash were speeding on the part of the Tricyclist and inadequate lighting systems from both vehicles to enable clear visibility.

“After the immediate evacuation of the victims, the road was cleared of the wreckages to enable free-flow of traffic.”

The statement further stated that due to low visibility in the early hours of the day, road users are advised to exercise extra caution when driving in foggy weather by Sector Commander of Akwa Ibom State, Matthew Olonisaye.

Reacting to the occurrence, the commander bemoaned the fact that it could have been prevented if people had remembered to take safety precautions and had not abused the privilege of having excellent roads by abusing their lack of obedience to traffic laws and regulations.

As a result, he took the opportunity to caution everyone who uses the roads against adopting a careless mindset that jeopardises everyone’s safety because lives lost cannot be replaced.

He issued specific warnings on, among other things, driving too fast, parking carelessly, inadequate lighting, driving at night, driving while intoxicated, and breaking traffic laws.

The sector commander expressed regret for the occurrence, sympathizing with the families of the departed and wishing for a speedy recovery for the injured.
