PANIC AS GAS PLANT CAUGHT FIRE IN RIVERS

Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Residents and business owners in the Rumukurusi axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were alarmed when a gas plant caught fire early on Tuesday.

It was learned that the incident happened around five in the morning, while most individuals were still asleep.

Locals reported that they heard shouts coming from the Hydropet Oil Services Limited gas facility when they woke up.

A local store owner, only identified as Grace, claimed to have witnessed the fire when she got up at around five twenty in the morning.

She stated, ā€œSo I quickly came out to the road leading to Eneka, lo and behold it was Hydropet gas plant that was on fire. The fire was huge. I was so afraid because My shop is close to that place.ā€

When our reporter arrived on the scene at around nine in the morning, he observed Federal Fire Service personnel attempting to douse the flames.

Newsmen were informed by a homeowner that the fire, which had burned for almost four hours, was put out by the Shell fire department.

ā€œImagine from Artillery to Eleme Junction there is no fire station. Even when the Federal Fire Service came within a short time they ran out of water.

ā€œThank God for the Shell Fire Services because we donā€™t know maybe the tank would have exploded.ā€

While several locals and business owners expressed concern over a potential explosion, a large number of people flocked outside to see the fire.

Numerous law enforcement officers and members of the fire department used red lights to demarcate the area and barricade it from automobiles.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the state’s police public relations officer, responded to our message by saying she would check with the police division and come back to us.

As of Tuesday morning, when I filed this report, she still hadn’t done so.
