NIGERIA 1-1 EQUATORIAL GUINEA: WASTEFUL EAGLES HELD TO A DRAW, OSIMHEN SCORES FIRST AFCON GOAL
By Ajape Sefiu A.
In their opening match of the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by Equatorial Guinea on Sunday.
Iban Salvador’s well-placed strike in the 37th minute gave Equatorial Guinea the lead and left Super Eagles goaltender, Stanley Nwabali helpless.
However, Nigeria responded quickly after the kickoff, as Victor Osimhen headed in the team’s equalizing goal just before halftime.
Nigeria missed numerous opportunities to score the game-winning goal. Despite scoring his first AFCON goal on his debut, Osimhen squandered a crucial chance in the 75th minute, which could have handed the Super Eagles their first win of the tournament.
Subsequently in the competition, Nigeria will be facing Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast in Group A.
