EFCC FREEZES N3BN TRACED TO FORMER AVIATION MINISTER BROTHER’S ACCOUNT

In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action by freezing N3 billion suspected to be linked to the brother of former Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika. Abubakar Ahmad Sirika, brother to the immediate-past Minister, was reportedly arrested and questioned by the EFCC over alleged involvement in a N8.06 billion contract fraud within the Federal Ministry of Aviation. Investigations by the EFCC revealed that a significant portion of the contract sum, totaling about N3.2 billion, was traced to Engirios Nigeria Limited, a company owned by Abubakar Sirika. Notably, Abubakar Sirika holds a Level-16 position as a deputy director in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources. During the tenure of his brother as Minister, four substantial contracts were awarded to Abubakar’s company, Engirios Nigeria Limited. However, it has been alleged that none of these contracts were executed. The contracts in question include: Construction of the Terminal Building in Katsina Airport (N1.3 billion). Fire Truck Maintenance and Refurbishment Centre in Katsina Airport (N3.8 billion). Procurement and installation of elevators, air conditioners, and power generator house in Aviation House, Abuja (N615 million). Procurement of Magnus Aircraft and simulator for Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Zaria (N2.3 billion). According to EFCC investigators, Abubakar Ahmad Sirika serves as the Managing Director/CEO of Engirios Nigeria Limited and is the sole signatory to the company’s accounts with two banks. It has been alleged that following the payment of N3.2 billion to Engirios Nigeria Limited, Abubakar Sirika transferred these funds to various companies and individuals. However, investigators have found no evidence of work being carried out on any of the contracted projects to date. The EFCC’s actions signal a significant crackdown on corruption within government contracts and underscore the agency’s commitment to holding accountable those involved in fraudulent activities.
