UPDATE: LASG DEVELOPS SUSTAINABLE STRATEGY FOR DREDGING, MINING PRACTICES
According to the Lagos State Government, a plan for environmentally friendly mining and dredging methods has been created.
This was recently revealed during the closing of the monitoring exercise for all dredging and mining sites across the five divisions of the state by Engineer Abiola Olowu, Special Advisor to Mr. Governor, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Office of Mineral Resources).
He said that the Ministry created the plan based on the numerous observations made during the visit to the various dredging and mining sites, in accordance with the THEMES Plus agenda of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration, particularly the “Making Lagos State 21st Century Economy” pillar.
The Special Adviser disclosed that the different mining and dredging locations have been categorised according to variables such as community concerns, operating scale, and environmental impact.
Olowu pledged that the Ministry will make sure that all relevant permissions and permits are secured, along with the required paperwork, adherence to environmental laws, operational procedures, and safety precautions regarding the effects on the environment and ecosystems.
He added that the Ministry will now make investments to educate the public about mining and dredging operations, as well as arrange seminars to instruct stakeholders on sustainable practices and environmental preservation.
With the Special Adviser on site were Mr. Cardozo Emilio (Director Solid Mineral Department), Mrs. Williams Oluremi, (Director Dredging Department) and staff of the Solid Mineral Department and Dredging Unit.
