H’QUBE CONSULTING LIMITED HOLDS CYBER SECURITY AWARENESS WORKSHOP, EXPERTS SPEAK ON ATTACKS

…… EFCC, ICPC, other experts reiterates the importance of cybersecurity awareness among Nigerians

A cyber security expert organization H’QUBE Consulting Limited, on Saturday held a one-day workshop to sensitize the public on cyber security awareness in order to be safe from cyber attacks.

Speaking during the one-day workshop in Lagos, themed: Cyber Seecurity Awareness at Combating Cybercrimes, the Convener, Mr. Ghazali, a security expert and also an accountant urged the participants to ensure that they do not fall victim to cyber criminals through careless handling of their sensitive personally identifiable information (SPI) like National Identification Number(NIN), Bank Verification Number (BVN) ATM card details and other sensitive data.

He went on to say that the workshop was necessary because, the level of investment in cyber security awareness in Nigeria and Africa at large is very low.

Ghazali also decried banker’s involvement in aiding cyber attacks while urging Nigerians to always lock their SIM cards to be on a safe side.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer, H’QUBE Consulting Limited, in his presentation, highlighted the need for more to be done at ensuring security in the digital space because humans are the weakest link to a successful cyber attack. He stated that research’s revealed that human accounted for over 95% vulnerabilities in data breaches.

Ghazali said, “Data privacy must be ensured. You must be the guard. Nobody can protect you better than yourself. We must try to secure ourselves and be careful in digital space.

“We must be secure, but truly, nobody is immuned or free. We must keep improving our cyberspace security. Your pin and password should be complex and we should desist from using things like date of birth as our password. He also said we should avoid saving our passwords to browsers.

“Most victims of cyber attacks undergo emotional distress, and many are really crying out there. Do not be reckless in digital space,”

Mr Wetkas; the Lagos State Zonal Commander of Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) ably represented by Mr. Suleiman Jijiwa; the deputy head, cybercrimes. while speaking during the event, stated that crimes had changed from the usual bloody physical attacks to digital form, and many people had fallen prey because of greed and ignorance.

“All they (cyber fraudsters) need now is laptop, network and knowledge. Crimes have no border, unlike before. You have to be there physically to perpetrate it.

“EFCC is watching. If you see something, say something, then we will do something to arrest the criminals,” he said.

Mr Wetkas urged the students to imbibe the culture of reporting cyber crimes right on time, saying that such could be done anonymously.

According to him, every cybercrime can be traced if reported to the appropriate authorities.

Advising the participants to always protect their data and not be hasty in releasing it without cross checking, Wetkas added that students must mind whatever they push on social media to avoid undue exposure to risks.

The Commander, while urging the students to stay clear of cybercrimes, he expressed regrets on the fact that some staff of financial institutions were always compromised.

According to him, the commission shares information with other agencies in the cyber space within and outside the country to clamp down on internet fraudsters.

Meanwhile, Ezike Onyema, who represented the State Zonal Head of ICPC, Abdul-Kabir Elelu, emphasised data protection, as he encouraged the participants to be safety conscious on cyber space.

“We need to be safe. Protect your BVN. Your BVN must be protected. Don’t let it out, ” he said.

Another speaker, Mr Ben Ekwere; a financial crime investigator expert, advised participants to always double check the security features of whatever e-commerce website that they visit, saying, ”the cost of cyber breaches is higher than what it will take to secure it.

Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, a computer science at the University of Lagos and the director of NITHUB later joined the ongoing event. Hqube Consulting Limited was commended for the awareness program and empowering the students with knowledge and training to be solution providers.

Dr. Odumuyiwa, urged the students to be security aware and be careful of information they pushed out about themselves, he stated that they must also be experts in the cyber security space.

He said; “If you are not greedy, you will not fall easily into the hands of the cyber criminals. Their tactics are to scare and lure. Be careful in providing information,”

The highlight of the event was the presentation of new laptop to two students of University of Lagos by Hqube Consulting Limited to support their digital and online learning.
