JUNE 12: GOV FINTIRI PARDONS FIVE INMATES, COMMUTES DEATH PENALTIES TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has pardoned five prisoners, including a woman, from the state’s various penal facilities in honour of 2024 Democracy Day.
The prisoners who were pardoned are Yusuf Ali and Babala Benson from Yola New Correctional Facility, Ali Abdul, Mohammed Goni, and Hapsatu Idi from Yola Old Correctional Centre, and Buba Usman Mai from Numan Correctional Centre.
The Governor, Humwashi Wonosikou, was informed of this through a news release sent by the Chief News Secretary.
Furthermore, Usman Inuwa and Joseph Eugene’s death sentences have been commuted by the governor to life in prison. The Yola New Correctional Centre is home to both of them.
The recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and the authority granted to Governor Fintiri by Section 212(i)(d) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, serve as the foundation for his decisions.
All legal formalities with the correctional facilities have been completed; hence, the five prisoners are released immediately, and the two death sentences have been commuted to life in prison.
