UPDATE: KWARA COURT RESERVES JUDGEMENT ON OFFA BANK ROBBERY CASE
The ruling in the six-year trial of the six suspects in the violent bank heist in the ancient town of Offa, Offa Local Government Area, has been postponed until August 2, 2024, by Justice Haleema Salman of the Kwara State High Court, who presided over the April 5, 2018 bank robbery.
The two principal attorneys in the case, Mathew Emeribe, the defense attorney, and Rotimi Jacob (SAN), representing the state, presented their cases in their final written speeches, which were approved by the presiding court on Monday.
On Monday, the legal teams representing the prosecution and defense took turns presenting their cases in court.
The presiding court did clarify that the judgment date of August 2, 2024, is provisional.
In relation to the violent armed robbery event, six individuals were detained: a police officer, Michael Adikwu (died), Ayoade Akinnibosun, Azeez Salahudeen, Niyi Ogundiran, Ibikunle Ogunleye, and Adeola Abraham.
In the case that started on November 11, 2018, Ayoade Akinnibosun and four other people are presently on trial.
Recall that on April 5, 2018, five commercial banks in the historic Offa town inside the Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State were attacked by a group of suspected armed robbers. The attack resulted in the deaths of over thirty people, including nine police officers.
The police charged Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, and two other suspects in court for allegedly plotting a bank heist, killing nine police officers and civilians, and unlawfully possessing firearms.
Michael Adikwu died in police custody while the remaining five pleaded not guilty.
